Welcome to GIMP
GIMP is a multi-platform photo manipulation tool. GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. The GIMP is suitable for a variety of image manipulation tasks, including photo retouching, image composition, and image construction.
GIMP has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
One of The GIMP’s strengths is its free availability from many sources for many operating systems. Most GNU/Linux distributions include The GIMP as a standard application. The GIMP is also available for other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows™ or Apple’s Mac OS X™ (Darwin). The GIMP is a Free Software application covered by the General Public License [GPL]. The GPL provides users with the freedom to access and alter the source code that makes up computer programs.

It is my recommendation that if you decide you want to try GIMP, only download it from the official web site. Other websites have a tendency of linking other programs to their downloads so you get more than what you really want or need downloaded from a site. ( this is true of all downloads so be especially aware of what you are downloading).
GIMP is an extremely useful tool in digital scrap booking. It allows you to use templates, masks, extract pictures and embellishments and a host of other uses. What you won’t learn is photo manipulation other than masks, and extraction because there are plenty of tutorials available if that is what you want to learn, what is not readily available are tutorials on using GIMP in scrap booking and this is where I come in. I am most willing to show you how flexible this program is for scrapping and once you learn the program you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Follow along with the posts to learn. It is also important to note the version of GIMP I am currently using is the newest: 2.8.0
